GLP-1 receptor agonists, introduced in 2006, are now widely used in the management of type 2 diabetes. These medications can control glycaemia without increasing the risk of hypoglycaemia, reduce bodyweight, and, generally unanticipated, have beneficial effects on cardiovascular and renal health, as well as an increasing number of other outcomes.1 Traditional GLP-1 receptor agonists were peptides, such as GLP-1, a gut-derived incretin hormone that stimulates insulin secretion when plasma glucose concentrations are elevated.
