Obesity and excess adiposity are major public health problems in China and Asia,1 but recognition and treatment have been constrained by BMI thresholds defining obesity derived from standards defined against non-Asian populations. Asian people have a greater risk of metabolic complications at a lower BMI than reference White populations, reflecting a tendency towards increased visceral adiposity at comparatively modest levels of total adiposity. Recognising this difference in the relationship between BMI and metabolic complications, definitions of overweight and obesity in China and Taiwan use lower BMI thresholds than global WHO cutoffs; for example, overweight is defined as a BMI of 24–<28 kg/m2, and obesity is defined as at least 28 kg/m2 using the Working Group on Obesity in China (WGOC) criteria.
