Europe has experienced increasingly frequent and record-breaking heatwaves this summer. Of the six WHO regions, the European region is the fastest warming, with temperatures rising at around twice the global average rate. The Lancet Countdown Europe 2026 report found that Europe's heat-related mortality rate rose by 52 deaths per million inhabitants between 1991 and 2000, and 2015–24. People with non-communicable diseases and comorbidities, including diabetes, can be particularly vulnerable to extreme heat.
