To hear lung cancer described as a chronic disease 20 years ago would have been unheard of. But that is how authors of a new Series of reviews on Therapeutics in Lung Cancer published in The Lancet and The Lancet Respiratory Medicine on Sept 6, 2026, describe how developments have helped patients survive years rather than months thereby turning the disease, for some, into a chronic condition. These improvements have come about partly through increasingly individualised treatment strategies driven by the biology of a patient's cancer, serial sampling to continue to inform on treatment options, introduction of immunotherapies, use of multidisciplinary team discussions, and an extremely active drug development pipeline.
