Universities and academic institutions are indispensable pillars of the modern world, and have been an integral part of societies over centuries. However, academia's relation to society and the core responsibilities of universities are continuously negotiated. Ideally, academia provides reliable scientific insights that drive progress towards better health and wellbeing for all on a sustainable planet. In this process, trustworthy science aims to increase knowledge that is unconstrained by the specific backgrounds under which research is performed and not influenced by political or ideological forces.
