Clinical takeaway

Stage and prognostic score are reported together (e.g. III:7); stage alone does not determine treatment.

When to use

Anatomic staging of GTN, used jointly with the prognostic score to guide single-agent vs combination chemotherapy.

How it works

I confined to uterus; II outside uterus but limited to genital structures (adnexa/vagina/broad ligament); III lung metastasis (± genital tract); IV other distant (brain/liver/kidney/GI). Expressed with the prognostic score as Stage:Score.

Key points

  • Stage and prognostic score are reported together (e.g. III:7); stage alone does not determine treatment.
  • GTN has no regional nodal staging — nodal disease is classed as M1b and is uncommon.
  • Prognostic score ≤ 6 is low-risk (single-agent MTX/actinomycin D); ≥ 7 is high-risk (combination, e.g. EMA-CO).
  • Even stage IV GTN has a relatively good prognosis compared with other solid tumours, especially lung-only disease.

Worked calculation

The values below come from this tool's own example placeholders and are computed server-side with the formula shown on this page, so the arithmetic can be checked quickly. It demonstrates how to substitute values only — it is not clinical advice and not a real case.

Extent of diseaseOutside uterus, limited to genital structures: adnexa/vagina/broad ligament (II)

→FIGO anatomic stageStage II

  • Anatomic stage:Stage II: outside uterus, limited to genital structures (adnexa, vagina, broad ligament)
  • Expression:Anatomic stage (Roman I–IV) + WHO/FIGO prognostic score (Arabic) are expressed together, e.g. 「III:7」; score ≤ 6 low-risk, ≥ 7 high-risk (see the GTN prognostic score tool)
  • Treatment link:Low-risk (score ≤ 6) usually uses single-agent chemotherapy (MTX/actinomycin D); high-risk (≥ 7) or with high-risk features uses combination chemotherapy (EMA-CO); brain/liver metastasis is individualised (radiation/surgery/intrathecal MTX)

Frequently asked questions

What are the limits and cautions when using GTN FIGO Anatomic Stage?
For licensed clinicians and clinical researchers. Interpret results with history, investigations and local protocols; not a diagnosis or prescription, and not a substitute for multidisciplinary decision-making or local guidelines.
Does GTN FIGO Anatomic Stage upload patient data? Where is it calculated?
Calculation runs locally in the browser; inputs and results are not uploaded. For licensed clinicians only; interpret with history, investigations and local protocols — not a diagnosis or prescription.
How is GTN FIGO Anatomic Stage calculated in practice? Can you show a worked example?
