Methodology · worked example, guidelines & full notes
MAP < 65 mmHg suggests inadequate organ perfusion.
When to use
Bedside estimate of perfusion pressure. An arterial line gives the true MAP.
How it works
MAP ≈ DBP + (SBP − DBP)/3. In adults with septic shock on vasopressors, SSC 2021 recommends an initial MAP target of 65 mmHg.
Key points
- MAP < 65 mmHg suggests inadequate organ perfusion.
- The 1/3 estimate is least accurate at high heart rates.
- Targets are individualised (e.g. higher in chronic hypertension).

The values below come from this tool's own example placeholders and are computed server-side with the formula shown on this page, so the arithmetic can be checked quickly. It demonstrates how to substitute values only — it is not clinical advice and not a real case.

Frequently asked questions
- Does Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) Calculator upload patient data? Where is it calculated?
- Calculation runs locally in the browser; inputs and results are not uploaded. For licensed clinicians only; interpret with history, investigations and local protocols — not a diagnosis or prescription.
- How is Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) Calculator calculated in practice? Can you show a worked example?
- Inputs: Systolic BP 120 mmHg, Diastolic BP 80 mmHg → Result: MAP 93 mmHg(Formula: MAP = DBP + (SBP − DBP)/3, Septic shock target: Initial target 65 mmHg in adults with septic shock on vasopressors (SSC 2021))
